Bathroom Renovation: What Actually Happens, Start to Finish

Renovations How-To

A bathroom renovation is one of the highest-impact projects you can do in your house, and one of the most disruptive while it's happening. If you're thinking about renovating a bathroom in the Barrie area, here's what the process actually looks like, step by step, so you know what to expect.

1. Demo

Everything old comes out: toilet, vanity, tub or shower, tile, and usually the subfloor if there's been any water damage. This is the loud, dusty part, and it's usually done in a day or two. If we find rot or mold behind the walls, and in older bathrooms we often do, that gets dealt with before anything goes back in.

2. Plumbing rough-in

With the walls open, the plumber moves or installs drain lines, water lines, and the shower valve. This is the time to decide if you want that shower head on a different wall, or if the vanity is moving. Changes after this point get expensive, so we lock the layout here.

3. Electrical

New lighting, exhaust fan, and GFCI outlets. Bathrooms need proper ventilation, especially in our climate. A good fan on a timer switch is one of the cheapest upgrades with the biggest payoff. No more foggy mirrors and peeling paint.

4. Framing and backing

Any walls that moved get framed. We also add solid wood backing anywhere a grab bar, shower door, or heavy mirror might go later. It's invisible once the tile's up, but future you will be glad it's there.

5. Drywall and waterproofing

Moisture-resistant drywall goes up, and the shower area gets a proper waterproofing system. This is the step that separates a bathroom that lasts 20 years from one that starts leaking in five. I don't skip it, and you shouldn't let anyone skip it either.

6. Tile

Floor tile, shower walls, grout. This is the slow, careful part, and it's where craftsmanship really shows. A good tile job is all about layout: centered patterns, even grout lines, clean edges. It takes as long as it takes.

7. Fixtures and finishes

Toilet, vanity, faucets, shower trim, mirror, lighting. The bathroom starts looking like a bathroom again. Then paint, caulking, and the final details.

8. Final walkthrough

We go through everything together before I call it done. Every faucet runs, every tile gets a look, every door and drawer opens and closes the way it should.

How long does it take?

A straightforward bathroom is usually a couple of weeks. If we're moving plumbing, dealing with rot, or waiting on a custom vanity or special-order tile, it can stretch longer. I'll give you an honest timeline with your quote, and I'll tell you right away if anything changes.
